Caring For Your BracesBraces are an important orthodontic tool that will realign your teeth and improve your oral health. While they are made out of durable metal, ceramics, or other materials, they are not indestructible. That is why our team at Roncone Orthodontics will make certain you understand how to take care of your braces. Here are some of the basic things to do to keep your braces safe so they can do their job of realigning your smile. Watch What You EatWhile you can eat a good variety of food with braces, there are some things you should avoid. These foods can easily get stuck in your braces or can actually damage them. Foods such as popcorn can easily get stuck in your braces. If you do not notice this and remove the stuck debris, it may cause the wires of your braces to move out of position. Debris also encourages bacteria to gather, which can lead to cavities. Sticky foods and foods that are hard are other things you want to avoid. Sticky candies and gum, for example, can easily get stuck all over your braces. If you bite into an apple, the wires of your braces could get stuck and come loose if you have to pull the apple to get them out. Any food that is exceptionally hard, including some breads and candies, could also damage your braces. We will provide you with further information about what foods you should avoid, but if you have any questions, always ask. Learn How to Perform Oral Hygiene with BracesYou certainly need to continue caring for your teeth and gums while you have braces, but you do need to be sure you understand how. Brushing should be done with a special toothbrush that will remove bacteria from your teeth without damaging your braces. Likewise, you will need to learn how to carefully floss around your braces or will need to get an oral irrigator. This device uses a stream of water to clean between your teeth, making it much easier to clean around the wires that go across your teeth. One thing you do not want to do is stop brushing or flossing as often as you should. Always take care of your oral hygiene, but remember, you may need to dedicate a little more time to it while you have braces. Call Us As Soon As Possible if Your Braces Are DamagedIf your braces get damaged or if they begin to feel very uncomfortable, you need to come see us as soon as you can. Braces should never cause you pain, but they can if they are damaged or if something has come loose. Damaged or malfunctioning braces can not only be uncomfortable, but they may not be exerting the pressure necessary to move your teeth. Carefully examine your braces in the mirror after you brush to make certain everything appears as it should. If you believe your braces may be damaged, call Roncone Orthodontics at (951) 595-8291 as soon as you can so we can get you an appointment. |
