First Visit
Temecula, CA
Whether you are scheduling an appointment for your child or finally taking the step for yourself as an adult, the first visit to an orthodontist is an important milestone. It is the moment when questions get answered, concerns are addressed, and a path toward a healthier, more confident smile begins to take shape. Knowing what to expect ahead of time can help ease any nerves and allow you to make the most of your first appointment with Roncone Orthodontics. At What Age Should a First Visit Happen? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. At this stage, enough permanent teeth have come in for the orthodontist to identify developing problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth. Catching issues early does not always mean treatment will begin right away, but it gives the orthodontist the opportunity to monitor development and act at the ideal time. That said, there is no age limit on orthodontic care. Adults seek treatment regularly and can achieve excellent results. If you never had orthodontic treatment as a child, or if your teeth have shifted over the years, an evaluation as an adult is just as worthwhile. Signs That You or Your Child May Need Orthodontic CareYou do not need to wait until a dentist refers you, though many patients do come through that route. There are signs you can look for that suggest an orthodontic consultation is a good idea:
Even without obvious symptoms, a routine evaluation is a smart preventive step. Some alignment issues are not immediately visible but become apparent during a professional exam. What Happens During the Consultation? The first visit is not a treatment appointment, it is a comprehensive evaluation. You can expect it to last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. Here is a general overview of what takes place: The appointment typically begins with a review of dental and medical history. This helps the orthodontist understand any relevant health conditions, previous dental work, and concerns you have already noticed. A clinical exam follows, during which the orthodontist examines the teeth, jaw, and facial structure. Dr. Christopher Roncone will assess how the upper and lower teeth come together, evaluate jaw alignment, and check for any signs of bite problems. This may include digital X-rays, photographs, and digital scans or impressions of the teeth. These records give our office a complete picture of what is happening both above and below the gumline. Once the records are gathered, Dr. Christopher Roncone will discusses the findings with you. This is when he will explain whether treatment is recommended, what issues are present, and what options are available. What Issues Does Orthodontic Treatment Address?Orthodontic treatment goes well beyond straightening teeth. It addresses a wide range of bite and alignment concerns, including:
Left untreated, many of these issues can contribute to uneven tooth wear, jaw discomfort, difficulty cleaning teeth effectively, and problems with chewing or speaking. Addressing them improves both function and long-term oral health. Will Treatment Start Right Away? What happens next depends entirely on the findings from your consultation. In some cases, especially with younger children, our orthodontist may recommend a period of observation, checking back every 6-12 months as the child grows. This is sometimes called a "watch and wait" approach. It allows the orthodontist to begin treatment at the most effective stage of development. For patients who do need treatment, some may be ready to begin within a few weeks of the first visit. Others may need to wait until additional permanent teeth have erupted, or until a referral to a general dentist or specialist is addressed first, such as a needed extraction or dental restoration. Some patients benefit from early, or Phase 1, treatment during childhood to address jaw development problems before the permanent teeth are fully in. This may be followed later by Phase 2 treatment once most or all of the permanent teeth have come in. Treatment Options You May DiscussDuring or after the consultation, the orthodontist will outline what treatment could look like. Options commonly discussed include traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces placed on the inner surface of the teeth, and clear aligner therapy. The right choice depends on the type and severity of the alignment issue, patient age, lifestyle preferences, and the recommendation of the orthodontist.
