Orthognatic Surgery Temecula CAA beautiful, straight smile is both aesthetically-pleasing and better for your oral health. Roncone Orthodontics offers a unique style of orthodontic treatment known as surgical orthodontics. While it is not for everyone, surgical orthodontics may be the ideal solution for significant jaw irregularities. Moving your jaw to the correct position also improves the alignment of your teeth, resulting in some cosmetic and functional benefits. What Is Surgical Orthodontics?Like conventional orthodontia, surgical orthodontics is designed to straighten teeth and correct a malocclusion, or misaligned bite. However, surgical orthodontics is usually reserved for complex issues that may not respond well to other treatment options. In almost every case, surgical orthodontics is used in conjunction with an oral appliance, such as braces or clear aligner trays. The goal of surgical orthodontics is to correct jaw irregularities. A properly positioned jaw, along with straighter teeth, can improve your ability to speak, chew, and breathe. Depending on your situation, your treatment may also result in a more esthetically-pleasing facial appearance. Candidates for Surgical OrthodonticsDr. Christopher Roncone will be able to determine if you are a suitable candidate for surgical orthodontics during your consultation appointment. Surgical orthodontics is most commonly used to treat adults with misaligned bites. Once jaw development is complete, which usually occurs between the ages of 16 and 18, surgical intervention may be the best way to achieve a proper bite. All jaw growth must be complete before we move forward with treatment. Whether or not we recommend jaw or orthognathic surgery depends on the severity of your orthodontic issues. How Does Surgical Orthodontics Work? Most conventional orthodontic treatment involves the use of an oral appliance that slowly moves your teeth to their proper alignment. This type of treatment may take anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the complexity of your misalignments. We may recommend the use of an appliance before, after, or during the surgical orthodontics process. We will begin your actual surgery with the application of local anesthetic, which numbs the area. Most patients also opt for some sedation method to provide an increase in comfort, especially if they have anxiety related to surgical procedures. Once you are properly prepared, we can make the first incisions. Any incisions usually take place within the mouth to eliminate visible facial scars. During lower jaw surgery, the jawbone behind the teeth is moved backward or forward, depending on the type of issue we are trying to correct. During upper jaw surgery, the jaw is raised, lowered, or otherwise repositioned to remedy a misalignment. For both types of surgery, we may need to add or remove bone for stability and alignment reasons. Your orthodontic surgery may take several hours to complete. We will then give you a set of post-operative instructions before you leave our office. Follow these instructions closely during the healing process, about four to eight weeks, to reduce your risk of developing any complications. We will be able to monitor your progress during several follow-up appointments. Schedule Your Initial Consultation in Temecula!Find out if you qualify for surgical orthodontics!
